The world faces a worsening water crisis, with lakes, ponds, and reservoirs contaminated by nutrients, wastewater, and industrial runoff. This pollution causes algae blooms, foul odors, ecosystem collapse, and high treatment costs. Conventional water treatment solutions are resource-intensive, relying on electricity, chemicals, or heavy infrastructure, making them expensive, slow to implement, and inaccessible for many municipalities, farmers, and communities.
BioReactor, developed by ZIUZEA, is a modular floating treatment wetland (FTW) that mimics natural purification processes. The units are made from recycled plastic and pre-planted with selected aquatic plants. They require no electricity, chemicals, or soil, are lightweight, and easy to install. BioReactor reduces nutrients, suppresses algae, improves water clarity, restores biodiversity, and creates habitats for plants, insects, fish, and birds. The system is complemented by IoT-based real-time water quality monitoring and additional biofilters for private and commercial use, enabling scalable, cost-effective, and low-maintenance ecological water treatment.
BioReactor reduces nutrient pollution, improves water clarity, restores biodiversity, and creates carbon sequestration through plant biomass. Socially, it transforms urban and public water spaces into healthier, aesthetically pleasing areas, benefiting tens of thousands of people per installation. Economically, it reduces treatment and maintenance costs, while offering municipalities and farmers a low-cost, scalable solution for clean water. At municipal scale, a single 400–700 m² installation can positively impact over 50,000 citizens.
