The problem

85% of school children in Kyrgyzstan showed below average rates in reading and scientific literacy in the 2019 PISA assessment. PISA is the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment. It measures 15-year-olds’ ability to use their reading, mathematics and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges. One of the reasons for the below average rates is the low level of professional qualification and absence of alternative up-to-date and evidencebased professional development programmes for teachers, incorporating instructional design principles.

The solution

The creation of an online school with advanced training courses for teachers from secondary education schools, universities and educational centers. The online school will allow teachers to take advanced training courses at any time and place convenient for them, regardless of geographic location.

Impact

SDG 4: The quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of the teachers working in it. If we want equal access to quality education for all citizens of Kyrgyzstan, we must first prepare teachers and give them access to continuous professional growth. Our online school is directly aimed at working with target 4.c – substantially increase the supply of qualified teachers, by 2030. We want to make our platform the most advanced online teacher training and development school worldwide, giving teachers from around the global access to develop and learn advanced techniques and use technologies.

SDG 5: 80% of teachers in Kyrgyzstan are women who struggled during the pandemic with the transition to online learning due to the lack of necessary digital skills and competencies. If we can ensure that teachers have constant access to digital knowledge and skills, they can in turn educate children, including girls, across the country.

SDG 10: By improving the quality of education in the country, we will impact the productivity and functional literacy of the population, which in turn will help our country develop.

As of 2022, more than 1,500 teachers have completed the online courses MUGALIM offers. We have four active courses and two more will be launched by the end of 2022. We have received feedback from our course graduates about how they have shifted towards a growth mindset and student-centered teaching approaches as the result of the courses.
